Artist
Onoja Matthias Paul (b. 1999) is a Nigerian artist whose charcoal drawings blend hyperreal precision with surreal imagination, creating work that bridges physical reality and the inner essence of being human. Primarily working in charcoal on paper, he explores the figure as a vessel of emotion, presence, and quiet divinity, inviting viewers to slow down and reflect on the profound layers of human experience. Inspired by nature, music, the human mind, and moments where meaning surfaces. His traditional approach, which involves using charcoal to create compositions that gently shift reality, aims to evoke self-analysis, introspection, and connection. Paul draws from art history and the human figure to balance technical mastery with emotional depth. For him, art is expression and a way to help people see themselves more deeply and recognise the beauty, complexity, and sacredness within.
